The news is confirmed on the Meebo blog, but a price for the transaction is not mentioned (although the company has been said to be worth around $100 million). The Meebo team says in the post that it’s “super jazzed up” to roll up its sleeves and “get cracking on even bigger and better ways to help users and website owners alike”. Meebo has started as a service connecting instant messaging services in its website – very useful for people not allowed to use such software at work like Windows Messenger or Pidgin. But Meebo has developed a social networking component recently.
A Google representative, quoted by The Next Web, says that Google is always looking for ways to help users share content and connect with others across the web. He added that the Meebo team will be working with the Google Plus team, considering their expertise in social publisher tools. In my opinion, the most attractive part of Meebo for Google is the instant messaging service. What better way to attract users of other IM services to Google’s side than a multi-protocol client. Not to mention that this could be very easily integrated in Chromebooks. And, believe it or not, there’s around 80 of them, including services like ibeatyou, Obesity Help or chess.com, alongside “classics” like Yahoo!, Trillian and Google Talk.
